just to prove i am not so proud i can't admit when i'm wrong, this entry to is say i was wrong.

i completely stand by my comments about australian film, but re: hollywood melodrama i talked to my tutor today and what she said actually made sense. while i still believe the reading about how hollywood is melodrama is a crock, i concede that the entire topic of melodrama is not. basically we are supposed to use melodrama as a way of reading the film, not how the film conforms to melodrama as a genre. yes, there is a difference, and yes, it does make sense, at least in my head

on a final note, i would like to say it's good to have a tutor that not only knows what she is talking about, but is willing to explain it further than 'well if you read the readings and attended the tutorials you would understand'. i'm sorry, but we aren't all used to your bullshit academic jargon. and you aren't as good at explaining things as you would like to believe. deal with it and learn to teach

yes, i was serious in the previous entry when i said i would discuss the bullshit of hollywood melodrama. no, i'm not referring to how melodramas make shit movies, even though they do. this rant is all about how, apparently, every movie ever made in america is a melodrama. seriously, that was the content of the lecture and reading. and it's bullshit. the argument was that because there are some elements that action movies have in common with melodrama, then that makes it an action movie with melodramatic qualities. and that goes for all hollywood films. so this reading, which was about 40 pages long, just went on and on about what makes a melodrama, and how every movie it examined had these qualities. funny how in all these 40 long, boring pages it never once mentioned what a melodrama *wasn't*. there was not a single example of a film that wasn't a melodrama. no talk about why european films aren't melodramas. so my question is simple. what the fuck isn't a melodrama? and if everything is a melodrama, then why do we have that genre at all? if everything is a melodrama, then nothing is a melodrama.

during today's australian film tutorial i didn't have a whole lot to contribute. and i just figured out why. cause the entire thing was bullshit. firstly, the buzzword for this week's lecture and reading was 'sublime'. i don't think anyone actually knows what they are referring to when they use it. the reading what about 10 pages long and seemed wholely devoted to defining this bizzarre term. but you know what? when you spent that much time trying to define a term, it loses all meaning. it means shock. it means fear. it means pleasure. it means pain. pick a fucking synomym and stick with it. until then i'm just going to read it all as meaning bullshit.

next up is the choice of movie for the topic of 'landscape'. mad max. got no problem with mad max. i liked the film. not gonna be making my top 10 list, but enjoyable. my question is this: why was it chosen to as a representative of landscape in australian cinema? it was not important at all to the movie. the story could have been set in any nation or continent and still had the same meaning. there was no 'sublime' fear of the landscape in mad max. it's a perfect movie if you want to talk about editing action sequences and showing off mel gibson's arse, but for a specifically australian landscape? no. show picnic at hanging rock. wolf creek. the proposition. hell, even the interview would have done it. when the best you can come up with for how the landscape is presented in the movie is 'the horizon is the same in each shot, and is always there' you know you are in trouble. of course the horizon looks the same. it's the fucking horizon. it's everywhere. and unless you turn the camera on it's side the horizon is gonna look the same. similarly, george miller did not specifically place trees in the background. they are kinda stuck there. it doesn't mean anything. and no, he didn't chose the colours of the cars in order to make them stand out from the landscape. those colours fit in with the pre-acopolyptic setting of the plot. ditto the leather and other crazy costumes

about an hour and a half ago i'm driving along the M5. i had just passed through the toll, and was in the fast lane doing about 110km/h. the car in front of my changes into the left lane to reveal a car, that for some reason had decided it was a good idea to stop in the fast lane of a motorway. i'm about 100 metres away from this stopped car, so i immediately try to change lanes, except there is a car on my left and a stone barrier on my right. there is not enough time for me to stop my car without skidding and losing control. i have to slow enough to get behind the car next to me and make sure i do it fast enough to miss this stopped car

if it had taken me an extra second or two to notice this stopped car there is no way i could have avoided hitting it

and a helpful hint for those that drive: if your car breaks down on a motorway, you really should not let it stop in the fast lane

edit: please note that the speed limit at this section was actually 110, so i was not speeding

Figure it out yourself. Or don't. I couldn't care less either way. I moved on long ago. You should try doing the same.

thanks to the greatness of poker we are getting the floor of our garage all done up. first they are grinding down a layer of the floor, getting rid of much much dust. this continues tomorrow. after which a few coats of something or other will be added to make it shiny. this also involved moving a shitload of junk out of the garage. the majority of which i'm sure will be chucked out rather than placed back. i'm regretting not taking some 'before' pictures. those would have been interesting.

now i just need to start charging for entry....

as much of you probably know, i'm not much of a lj'er. only post when i'm in a really shit mood, or a really good mood.

ahh...gotta love the latter.

the majority of my day involved my waking up and doing jack shit. sat on the computer for awhile. drove my sister to a friends place. then went to casino with macca, ed, kon, bennie. that is where the fun started. first of all ed lost about 200 playing blackjack. then he lost another 200 playing poker. ah, that was nice and sweet. then i win about 130 playing poker. ah, that was nice and sweet. then ed manged to win back 300 on roulette, only losing 100 for the night. that was a bit of a downer, but not enough to ruin the night.

and then the car ride home. words cannot do it justice, so i won't even bother trying. laughter was had, and much of it. that is all you need to know.

now i need to spend my well earned cash. and watch buffy. nice end to the day
